When shopping for jewelry, it can be confusing to know what’s "solid gold" and what’s "plated gold". Is the difference really that big? Yes!
Gold-plated jewelry is made by applying a thin layer of gold onto another metal - usually inexpensive metals like brass or sometimes silver. It can be an affordable option, but the thin gold layer is susceptible to tarnishing very quickly the more you wear it and will fade over time.
On the other hand, solid-gold jewelry is made entirely of gold. Solid gold jewelry is hypoallergenic and won't irritate your skin. It won’t tarnish because gold doesn’t oxidize like other metals, making it durable enough for everyday wear, and a choice for people who seek pieces with longevity. Phillip Gavriel only uses solid gold in its jewelry pieces, so you’ll know right away that your piece will have value for years to come with proper care.
What Kind of Gold Jewelry Do You Want?
Gold jewelry is categorized by the amount of pure gold in it, measured in Karats (or "K"). Pure gold is 24 karat, but it's so soft that it's unsuitable for daily wear.
At Phillip Gavriel, we only use 14-karat (14K) and 18-karat (18K) gold to make our jewelry. These are combinations of pure gold with other metals to make them durable and to make the color of the metal softer and brighter. 14K gold has 58% pure gold white, and 18K gold has 75% pure gold in it. Our solid gold pieces are made using 14-karat gold, while our 18k gold pieces are made in combination with sterling silver. Keep this in mind: whenever you see yellow gold in our pieces, it's real gold, never a plating.
